The Fedivision song contest is ON!

What is Fedivision? We are a light-hearted musical competition among amateur musicians on the Fediverse. You can submit one original unreleased piece < 4 minutes long in any genre. In May 2024, we will listen to all the entries and the fediverse votes on the best song!

Now in its fourth year, we have a brand new dedicated instance. Please follow this account to be kept informed. PLEASE BOOST this post so that all your musician friends get the word.

Submissions for are CLOSED! Thank you to the more than 70 musicians who have fielded an entry this year.

Take a breather! The Fedivision elves will spend the next week reviewing the entries for eligibility, building the streaming site, getting the voting bot cranked up. Then voting by you, the public, will start in one week, on Sunday 19 May!

Take a breather! The Fedivision elves will spend the next week reviewing the entries for eligibility, building the streaming site, getting the voting bot cranked up. Then voting by you, the public, will start in one week, on Sunday 19 May!

Three hours to go! Submissions will be turned off at 13.00 UTC _sharp_ because that's 11 pm in my time zone and I'll be tired and grumpy from staying up hoping to see the Aurora Australis and seeing nothing. Get your entry in with plenty of time because you don't want the inevitable Wordpress crash to be your undoing!

Administrivia: Please keep your download links active until 19 May 2024; there are a lot of entries and it takes time to download them all!

Administrivia: We’ve started to download submissions from the links you gave. A few links are not working. We will message you if there is a problem. Please PLEASE make sure you can receive DMs from this account. It would be horrible if your submission couldn’t be included because we couldn’t download it.

A couple of days left to get your entries in! As of this morning there were 43 submissions, the same as last year, so this should be our biggest year ever!

@mxtthxw Downloading hasn’t started just yet, so the edited version will be what we see. Will DM you in the unlikely event there is a problem.

@yours_truly No, please don’t. Fedi servers transcode the heck out of media and I don’t trust it not to butcher the attachment.

Administrivia: People are asking where they can upload their entries. These are acceptable (list not exhaustive):
• Dropbox share link (trick: change the dl=0 to dl=1)
• Ditto OneDrive, iCloud, Google Drive
• Ditto etc etc your favourite sharing service
• Prerelease share link to private track on Bandcamp
• Ditto Soundcloud
• On your NAS if you know how to port forward

Some of these can, at best, pop up a web page with a Download button. That’s OK. We will cope! 😌

@SkylarkDuquesne @RinostarGames Something like a Dropbox* link, or a download link to a private copy of the file on your Soundcloud/ Bandcamp page. Realistically I’m going to have to paste the URL into a browser and press a Download button, and that’s good enough.

Not attached as media on a post by your Fedi account! Because then you’ll have made the song public before voting opens.

* Or Google Drive, iCloud, Pastebin, etc.

@FediTips

@FediTips Thanks for the shout-out (and for MastoDDoSing our server! Lol. It’s ok now)

Administrivia: If you need to discuss anything with the organizers or add something that you couldn’t say on the form or you’ve got any questions at all, send us a DM here. If you block DMs from non-followers, best to follow this account so you don’t miss messages from us.

@ScottHuehnerkrisp is correct, we will fetch the file once and host it for the duration of the contest. @skye

Administrivia: if you make a mistake submitting the form at fedivision.party, or have to update the link, just resubmit it with the corrected or updated details. We’ll delete the old entry from the submission database, leaving only the new entry.

is open to submissions! (A couple of hours early because Wordpress, amirite?)

Musicians: you’ve got one more week to finish your entry. The form is live, and you can fill it in right now.

Enter here: fedivision.party/

Listeners, mark 19 May in your calendars, the date when you can hear all the entries.

@Langile is right, lyrics are a field on the form you fill in at submission time. Songs aren’t posted on the Fedi as media; they are hosted on fedivision.party and you’ll use a web browser to stream them. The lyrics will be published on the same page. @ScottHuehnerkrisp

🚨 Two week alert 🚨

Submissions for the song contest are due Sunday 12 May at the latest.

The form will be active from 5 May.

As always, more detail at fedivision.party

This year, we are pleased to announce that Radio Free Fedi @radiofreefedi will be offering a pop-up channel during voting week, where you can listen to Fedivision 2024 entries on repeat.

Entrants, you will be asked at submission time if you’d like your song shared with RFF. This is _opt in_; we know you don’t all love RFF. The Fedivision site at fedivision.party/ continues to host all entries and listeners can stream on demand from there.

@trebach Thanks, that’s really helpful. Will discuss with the other organizers.

(Updated the FAQ at fedivision.party/faq/ with Actually Asked Questions made to this account.)

@trebach LOL, yeah, sure, that’s fine. Go ahead and use sampled instruments to your heart’s content.

But seriously, is there a better way for us to word the restriction on lifting entire seconds from someone else’s song? Like the whole Bittersweet Symphony situation?

@ddlyh Confirmed, mastodon.social accounts are eligible this year. Blocked servers are imported from the Seirdy Tier 0 list.

@herr_irrtum 2: If you’re a session musician on other people’s entries, that’s fine and it doesn’t preclude your own entry. (Example: “Money for Nothing” is a Dire Straits song, even though you can hear Sting’s voice.) In other words: there’s a line, but it’s not where you are, it’s more at collaborations and bands.

Looking forward to hearing your comeback entry after the joy of your Fedivision creation last year!

— Futzle, TQ & Zatnosk

@herr_irrtum 1.2: Not required! Indeed, we will be linking your song to your Fedi account all over the place; part of the mission of Fedivision is to showcase the musicians in our network.

@announce @herr_irrtum All three of us have discussed and we feel:

1.1: We would like you to hold off until the playlist is published on 19 May. After that you can hype your entry as much as you like. The reasoning is that we want all entries to have the same amount of time in our listeners’ ears. (The week from 12 to 19 May is for us organizers to download, transcode, upload, etc. and it will definitely take a week if last year was any guide.)

@herr_irrtum Good questions, we’ll need to convene the organizers and come to a decision. Stay tuned.
