is wrapped and done! This instance and fedivision.party have been slipped into quiescent mode. We hope you’ve had fun participating this last month. Please continue to follow this account for further events.

(Updated the FAQ at fedivision.party/faq/ with Actually Asked Questions made to this account.)

@trebach LOL, yeah, sure, that’s fine. Go ahead and use sampled instruments to your heart’s content.

But seriously, is there a better way for us to word the restriction on lifting entire seconds from someone else’s song? Like the whole Bittersweet Symphony situation?

@ddlyh Confirmed, mastodon.social accounts are eligible this year. Blocked servers are imported from the Seirdy Tier 0 list.

@herr_irrtum 2: If you’re a session musician on other people’s entries, that’s fine and it doesn’t preclude your own entry. (Example: “Money for Nothing” is a Dire Straits song, even though you can hear Sting’s voice.) In other words: there’s a line, but it’s not where you are, it’s more at collaborations and bands.

Looking forward to hearing your comeback entry after the joy of your Fedivision creation last year!

— Futzle, TQ & Zatnosk

@herr_irrtum 1.2: Not required! Indeed, we will be linking your song to your Fedi account all over the place; part of the mission of Fedivision is to showcase the musicians in our network.

@announce @herr_irrtum All three of us have discussed and we feel:

1.1: We would like you to hold off until the playlist is published on 19 May. After that you can hype your entry as much as you like. The reasoning is that we want all entries to have the same amount of time in our listeners’ ears. (The week from 12 to 19 May is for us organizers to download, transcode, upload, etc. and it will definitely take a week if last year was any guide.)

@herr_irrtum Good questions, we’ll need to convene the organizers and come to a decision. Stay tuned.

Greetings, Fediverse! Hope you’ve been busy working on your submission for the Fedivision Song Contest!

Submissions will open on Sunday 5 May 2024 and close on Sunday 12 May 2024 [at a midday-UTC-ish time].

Listening and voting will run from Sunday 19 May 2024 to Sunday 26 May 2024, with results announced soon after!

Bookmark fedivision.party for submission and further info!

@chn Heya, we ask for songs to be short because we’re aware of the time commitment for voters to listen to dozens of songs. Last year there were >40 entries and total listening time was 2½ hours. We’re expecting more entries this year as more instances are eligible. We acknowledge that 4 minutes is challenging for some kinds of music but feel that moving the goalposts partway through the contest isn’t fair to the songwriters who have already started. We’ll make a note to revisit this next year.

@Djembe_Orchestras_Of_Colorado Entry isn’t open yet; submission will be at fedivision.party/ in early May.

@ForiamCJ @announce Parodies that reuse the melody or chords or lyrics of an existing song aren’t eligible for Fedivision, sorry. Same goes for cover versions. This is a contest for new music.

@rikard The reason why past recordings aren’t on the site is that we aren’t licensed to retain them past the duration of the event. You could seek out the musicians mentioned and find links to their music, they have often been included as tracks on later albums on Bandcamp or elsewhere.

But we don’t focus much on the past years because we want Fedivision to be an event that happens in the moment.

You haven’t said if you felt like participating as a contestant or a listener. Maybe it’s neither, that’s OK too.

@shanesemler Thank you for taking the time to tell us how you feel.

@toran @announce Mid May 2024, exact dates TBD. Edit: there will be a popup site on fedivision.party/ with an embedded player.

@Lioh It’s fine if you are an artist that plays in the style of another artist. But the song must be your own composition. If there are lyrics, they must be your own composition too. See the FAQ that @vintprox linked to for more guidance.

@stenpett Audio only; follow this account and visit fedivision.party/ for more info and announcements.

@ddlyh There’s no limit—you can be USA For Africa if you like!—but that counts as the entry for all those people. If the Spice Girls field an entry, Geri Halliwell can’t, and vice versa.

@cobalt The spirit of the contest is that we all get to listen to all the music for the first time, at the same time. We’d rather you didn’t leak WIPs or previews.

iZotope Ozone seems fine: it’s a production tool, not a composition tool.

Start production now, or whenever you need so that you are ready to submit at the start of May 2024.

@RangerRick It was the latter, but that’s out of date because now we have our own instance here with its own blocklist. Will fix!

Edit: updated! Thanks!

@Mondgesicht Ah, you found a holdover from last year. Will fix. Last year your instance needed to be not blocked by mastodon.art. Now we have our own instance with its own block list.

Edit: updated. Thanks!

Musicians! This one is for you!

If you’d like to field entry in the song contest, take a look at the FAQ at fedivision.party/faq/ for guidance on what can be submitted. We will update the FAQ with any further questions that roll in; please feel free to ask by replying to this post or DMing this account.

Everyone else: hang tight, and watch out for the listening party and voting in May 2024.

@announce @chusgc Last year there was an entry in Polish, an entry in French, and about fifteen instrumentals.

@chusgc @announce Submissions in any language are fine! Also in no language.

@FreakyFwoof Hi, here’s the alt text: “Fedivision song contest banner. The V of Fedivision is the Fediverse pentagram logo.”

The server software for fedi.vision isn’t Mastodon, it’s Takahē, and it was a bug in Takahē that stripped the alt text I wrote for the image. I’m not confident that I can edit a post in Takahē without breaking it and requiring the post to be deleted and redrafted. For that I apologize. The good news is that I’ve found out how to avoid the bug happening again.

@amin More later, don’t want to flood people, but if you’re a musician looking to enter, see fedivision.party/
