This is your occasional reminder that the father of the husband of my mum's Aunty Ruby introduced the private member's bill that ultimately resulted in Australia having compulsory voting.
If the best Labor has to offer on threats to Medicare is bad AI cat videos, we’re in for a bad time politically in Australia

Just realising I've never done an #introduction ..
living in #moolabinba/#newcastle, #australia, #earth, on the Orion-Cygnus Arm of the Milky Way, somewhere in the Laniakea Supercluster.
I do questionable things with numbers, in particular related to #climate #science, #statistics, and #risk.
I also turn numbers into #music via #musicproduction and #synthesis, and playing #drums.
I'm interested in using these things for #socialchange. Keeping a close eye on #auspol.
What a stupid argument. I don't give a shit if the coffee costs $4 or $4.05 - I just don’t want to see an annoying pissy little surcharge on my bill.
"The cost may ultimately come back to bite consumers via higher prices. And that cup of coffee will still cost you $4.05 – but the 5 cents will be part of the retail price rather than the surcharge."

If you happen to be a government minister making decisions about what questions to include in a #Census, there are some excellent books on categories and category work that are important reading.
Our world is built on categories. Categories have power. And those people for whom there are no categories are dis-empowered, marginalised - and uncounted.
Data Feminism, by Catherine D'Ignazio and Lauren Klein, takes an intersectional feminist view of data analytics, showing how data do not speak for themselves, and how the work of data analysts - category work - is crucial to social change.

Sorting Things Out: Classification and its Consequences by Geoffrey Bowker and Susan Leigh Star is an exploration of how categories form part of infrastructure, blending into the background, invisibly shaping the world. Bowker and Star show how categories legitimate various things - types of work, types of people.

Categories we Live By: How we classify everyone and everything by Gregory Murphy shows us where categories come from, how they are shaped, and the power they have.

The government is responsible for "category work" in the census - defining the categories that shape Australia, and the categories that make people invisible - or serve to hide them.
The #Census is category work. And we need better categories.

This isn’t even the half of it. They’re planning a 3 part series, energy allowing & also playing it by ear.
People helping is most important. More than money. I need an #advocate & safe place to live most. Please consider.🙏

& occasionally #auspol (sorry).
Old posts are deleted when I get around to it, every week or two. It seems the polite thing to do.

Right. That takes care of the hashtags. 66, female, cis, but not obnoxious about it, talk to everyone about anything really. Retired from work but not from life. Activist but not active. I reserve my physical labour for my garden, love reading my detective books and playing Steam casual gaming. Relearning how to engage in a relaxed and not a confrontational manner. She/her. Living on stolen Awabakal country in Lake Macquarie/Newcastle, Australia.
I've left #Reddit as well now so here's another hashtag.

On the topic of the last boost: honestly I can't see a reason why we shouldn't let 5 year olds vote
Literacy and english tests are obviously discriminatory. The existence of one nation voters shows we allow people with no understanding of the situation vote
So yeah, let 5 year olds vote
They live here, they get a vote #auspol
A couple of months on, I have a better idea what I’m doing here, so it’s time for a new #introduction!
Hi, I’m Dave. I care full-time for my disabled wife, and live with two #cats. My work background’s in passenger #trains, hospitality, customer service, and #auspol. (I only rarely post about the latter, usually under a CW screen.)
I’ve been playing #ttrpg for nearly 40 years, and I’m also into #history, #science, and #weird stuff in general.
Pleasure to meet you. I hope you feel the same.
